First timers to Las Vegas - Help!

My wife and I are due to travel out to Vegas in 3 weeks time and boy are we looking forward to it. The trouble is, although we have been abroad many times in the past (to Orlando for the past three years) we have always gone self catering and stayed in apartments or villas. How do we cope with hotels and their practices? Whats this about tipping the housemaids, are we expected to tip everyone, and if so , how much?

By the way we are staying in the Stratosphere for the first week and the Luxor for the following week, stories in the forum relating to the dubious environment of the Strat is starting to give me cold feet.

Tipping the maid is nice $2 per night is the norm. In restaurants and bars 10-15% of the bill is usual. More for great service, less if you%26#39;re left waiting. For buffets, $1-2 if all they do is bring you a drink or 2, more if they are more attentive. If they bring your bags to the room $1-3 per bag depending on how heavy they are. Taxi driver 10% of the bill (I personally have not met any that rated more than this for a tip). Dealers, if they are nice, make you laugh, entertain you, keep you interested or privide you with answers to your questions should get 10-15% of what you buy in, or win. Whichever is bigger. For my suggestions on how to tip when you%26#39;re winning, go to the search bar and enter ';tipping casino money';. For the link to my post on this subject.

The Stratosphere is a fine mid level hotel. Just make sure if you head out on foot you walk towards Sahara Avenue, not away from it.

for tipping advise.

I think a week at the Stratospere would be a nigtmare! You can find much better deals on the strip and especially downtown ie Gold Nugget. I%26#39;m afraid if you stay at the Stratosphere 1st you%26#39;ll just bag the 2nd week and go home- not good for your 1st trip. Have fun

Please be sure to tip. These people work hard for their money and you will find you get much better service when giving someone a tip. i personally make it a point to tip very well on the first round. The cocktail waitresses remember you and make sure you get good service. I gave a bartender a 20 dollar tip at the Mirage and she made sure that while we were playing and sometimes even not playing our Grey Goose and tonics were always full. If i remember correctly we tipped her another 20 when we left. I know she still works at this bar and we will make an effort to go see her again. Her name is Michelle and she works at the Baccaratt bat at the Mirage.

I agree with all, except I think waitstaff should receive 15-20%. I usually leave 20 unless the service is very bad, and even then I won%26#39;t usually leave less than 15%.

Have a wonderful trip!:)

Nobody in Vegas gets paid a regular or hourly wage , therefore you must walk around with a fistful of dollars handing them to everyone that provides a service to you to ensure that they do their job. If it wasn%26#39;t for leftovers from the buffets they wouldn%26#39;t be eating I suppose, so be nice and keep the green flowing.

Not just in Vegas, but anyone in the service industry.

Pretty much a thankless job. I know I couldn%26#39;t do it.

Stayed at the Luxor last year. Its a very nice hotel. Only went to strat for the rides but area nearby was a bit dodgy. Ok if you have a car as you can drive down to the nicer bit or get a cab. If I were you I would try to change to EX or MC. Most hotels will let you change with notice. Couldn%26#39;t believe it when all drinks were free. Just give the lady a couple of dollars every time and they soon remember you. Even if you are playing the cheep games. Can you imagin that in UK.

Don%26#39;t worry as that area is no worse then some bits of England.

Thanks for the replies, I%26#39;ll take your advice and look forward to a fantastic time.

Good to get your advice Ads, I%26#39;ve worked in Bermondsey for 4 years so the Stratosphere should be a doddle!

i would ditch the strat and just have the luxor for two weeks. my brother stayed at the strat my parents stayed at the strat i have stayed at the luxor, we all agreed that when given a choice between the two the luxor wins hands down in every respect. honest believe me! but i tell you what.... youll have a ball in vegas! going myself in april.

Thanks Kevin, but we are primarily out in Vegas for a family wedding and other members of the family have booked the Stratosphere so obviously we want to share the experience with them. As long as the Strats no worse than downtown Sunderland on a night time we will enjoy it!

Do you have any idea if there is a pub broadcasting the Toons (soccer) game against Spurs on sky t.v. in early april. I may post this as a seperate thread.
