We at times leave a lot of money in the room (no safe) while we are out for the day. By a lot of money I mean $ 6-700 We%26#39;ve never had a problem. And I haven%26#39;t read much on this board about theft.
Are we being to risky ?.
Are there any concerns about any particular hotel(s) regarding theft or other security issues ?

Why would you leave so much cash in your room without a safe?
Seems very risky to me. As much as we%26#39;d like to trust people, we really can%26#39;t. Plus since it%26#39;s cash, how would you prove that you ever had it.
I would rather carry it on my person than leave it in my room.
I have left other items of value, such as cameras, etc. and never had any problem, but a large amount of cash is a different story.
Be careful!!

What about laptops? are room safes big enough for a laptop? If not ,what do you all do with them.
Even though I wil be on vacation I want to be able to check mail etc so don%26#39;t want to leave it at home.
Suggestions please!
Thanks
check with the front desk, they usually offer safes behind the desk
Are the safes at the front desk free ?, and convenient ?
SNKfish, all the hotels I am aware of provide safes free of charge.
SNKfish - first off, leaving that much cash in your room is risky - as everyone has advised ask the front desk for a safety deposit box (they are free)- if you have no safe in your room.
Housekeepers overall are very trustworthy, but at times someone slips through the cracks (or does crack!) I worry more about maintenance helpers or porters. We have had experiences where they go in and steal housekeepers tips. So please be safe - put it some place safe.
As for laptops, I have never had a laptop stolen in my career - not have I heard of one taken from a room. From a car - that%26#39;s different. And no I don%26#39;t believe your laptop will fit in a room safe - it%26#39;s more for valuables and cash.
VHM and VHB,
Although technically they are free. Someone posted recently that the SFD%26#39;s at Orleans require a $50 cash deposit. The $50 is returned when you give back the key. Great way to make sure you have some cash left over for cab, gas money, or paying parking fees when you return home.

Joe -
I don%26#39;t know about the Orleans - but most of us don%26#39;t charge. I understand Orleans position - if the key is lost or not returned our only option is to drill the safe deposit box (no back up keys for security purposes).... But as we look at it, it%26#39;s filled with their money and valuables - if they lose the key we then charge them for the locksmith to drill the box to get to their items.
But just like properties with inroom safes - a charge is usually added ($2-$5 a day). If you don%26#39;t use the in room safe, at check-out you can request the charge be reversed
