Has anyone taken a tour or is it just a place you could drive by car (I know you can%26#39;t really see the buildings) and just have a fun time messing around in maybe the town. I checked on some tours and they look really pricey and one even has you climbing down some steep hill. Just looking for some non casino type adventures. We are already seeing the grand canyon. Also maybe that nuculer testing place
Area 51 tours/nucular testing place
Thier are tours not into the site - nor even near it, but on the peremiter (which is like 75 miles from actual site) - All you will be able to see is desert and maybe a Antenna and a couple of monitors watching you off in the distance.
As for the nuclear testing site - same thing - no admitance.
A new musem just opened here in Las Vegas covering the history of the test site - closest you can get to seeing the real thing.
Area 51 tours/nucular testing place
Conspiracy theorists not withstanding, there is no ';Area 51'; per se. AFA the Mercury Test Site is concerned, there WAS talk of tours, but I don%26#39;t know if anything came of it. You can certainly do a ';drive by';, but you aren%26#39;t going to see anything interesting. Well, expect maybe some military aircraft dropping flares and chaff, while playing in Red Flag....
I agree w/the other posts.. don%26#39;t waste your gas $$ to see a lot of nothing.
There is a Ghost Tour in Vegas. I haven%26#39;t been but it sounds fun... and different.

Grumbles - you are incorrect - Fact - the goverment does not deny an area 51. Fact - the dry lake bed area in question is on goverment maps and is known as area 51. Fact - thier is a flight complex in the area. Not Fact - Aliens exist at area 51.
In addition, thier are several flights a day to and from area 51 from McCarran Airport - transporting only employees to the work site. The aircraft an unmarked 737 parks at the executive terminal across the field from the main airline terminal.
As for Red Flag - 1/2 of Nevada is federal land - used for military purposes. Red Flag operations do take place in part of this area, up toward Indian Springs, but has nothing to do with area 51. Red Flag is the largest air war training program in the world based out of Nellis AFB here in Las Vegas. It brings together numerous Air Forces (not just U.S.) from around the world to practice literally for WWIII -
Area 51 certainly does exist. I have a relative who works there and flies there 4 days a week for the last 6-years as a contractor out of LV airport. Employees call it Dreamland, The Ranch, Paradise Ranch, and The Farm.
No aliens or spaceships. It is just an AFB for military contractors to develop and test aircraft, like the U-2, F-17, F-22, SR-71, B-1, and future aircraft. No way to get close to it unless you work there.
Fact: I was an Aggressor for three years uprange.
Fact: I ALSO worked uprange as my previous postings indicate. Didn%26#39;t just blow in off the haytruck here.
Fact: On 91 north you WILL See aircraft blowing chaff and dropping flares; I know I DID IT.
Fact: Sorry, but there is no ';AREA 51'; on ANY chart etc. My point is that%26#39;s hype. Didn%26#39;t deny testing etc goes on up there.
Grumbles - never said they didn%26#39;t play war games in the desert - they do it all the time. But thier is an area 51 - and it is properly mapped as such - please check your dry lake bed map. One of those little squares - says ';51';.
Hello Suz, from another Suz. =)
We were in Vegas about a month ago, and we went to the new Nevada Test Site Museum. My hubby is into nuclear things big time, and he really wanted to go on the actual tour of the Nevada Test Site, but didn%26#39;t get his paperwork filled out until too late. The Department of Energy does actual tours out to the test site once a month, but you have to register months ahead of time. But the museum was just as cool. It cost $10 per person to get in, and had lots of neat displays, movies, etc. Hubby left happy, with lots of souvenirs. LOL
One of the days we were in Vegas, we drove up to Rachel, NV, just to see it for ourselves. We ate at the Little Ale%26#39;Inn, and took a few pictures and bought a few souvenirs. All I can say is, it was a LONG drive with not much to see along the way (except for desert, LOL). When we went, it was pretty cold up there, since the elevation was higher than in Vegas. While Vegas had sun and temps in the 60%26#39;s, it was in the high 30%26#39;s, low 40%26#39;s in Rachel. Brrrrrrrrr.... But hey, we can say we%26#39;ve been there, done that now. LOL
I suggest you go check out the Red Rocks. That%26#39;s only 20 minutes from the Strip, and well worth the trip out there. You can see gorgeous rock formations, wild burros by the side of the road, and all sorts of pretty scenery. We went horseback riding there, and really enjoyed it!!
Hope that you have as much fun on your vacation as we did! =)

On DoD aeronautical charts there IS a restricted area around Groom (Dry) Lake. But, and this is my point, it%26#39;s NOT called ';Area 51'; in ANY DoD material. My guess is, the UFO-conspiracy folks like this term instead of the more prosaic ';Groom Lake'; because it sounds mysterious.
My other point is that the aircraft you WOULD see are those from RF. No worries, and oh BTW the wallpaper in your hotel is old :)
I did recieve a call today and the phone number of the person that has the nucular tours. I know you have to sign up at least 3 weeks in advance and I believe its a free tour. I have not called the person yet. The ';area 51 tour'; is called the ET experiance.
